Rental Information

RATES - All rates include Unlimited kilometers, 24hr national roadside assistance, Road maps.

RENTAL DURATION - Rental days are calculated on a 24 hour time period commencing at the time possession of the car is taken. - e.g A car collected at 9am must be returned by 9am to avoid incurring late drop off charges or an extra days rental.

RENTAL LOCATION - Cars are available at over 60 rental locations in New Zealand. Our reservations department will be able to advise you of the locations available. Cars are generally available for either collection at either a downtown or airport location. Some locations may incur an additional fee to be charged.

RENTAL AGE - Minimum age is 21 years .

LICENCSE - A full resident country driver's license, held for at least one year, is to be presented at the time of rental. If the license is not in English format, an international driver's license is also required.

FUEL - All vehicles are provided with a full tank of fuel. You must return the car with a full tank or a refueling charge will apply.

CHILD SEATS - Child/ Booster seats are required by law for all children under the age of 5. These can be rented at a charge of approx $35 per rental.

FREE HOTEL DELIVERY - Budget will deliver to hotels/motels within a 10 kilometre radius of any Budget location between the hours of 8.30am and 4.00pm Monday to Friday and excluding Public Holidays). Special conditions may apply for deliveries outside these hours. Customers can take advantage of Budget's hotel/motel vehicle pick-up service. On completion of the hire your customer is responsible for notifying Budget of time of return. Please note that all deliveries and pick-ups must be pre-booked.

SCEURITY BOND - All rentals require a security bond of NZ$150 which must be paid at the start of your rental. This fee is fully refundable if your vehicle is returned on time, to the correct location, undamaged and with a full tank of fuel.

AIRPORT / FERRY FEE - An airport/ferry terminal fee of NZ$28 + GST applies to all vehicles collected from these locations. This fee is levied by the airport and the ferry terminal authorities and is paid direct to Budget when collecting the vehicle. (Please note : This fee only applies once to any multi-island rentals).

MINIMUM RENTAL - Minimum rental period is 3 days.

DEPOSIT - All drivers must hold a major credit card (debit cards such as Switch and Delta are not acceptable). A credit card imprint will be taken on collecting your car to cover any extras which have not been pre-paid e.g taxes, fuel, child seat, airport fee and the security bond of $150.00.

INSURANCE - All vehicles are covered with Budget Motor Insurance giving third party cover to NZ$250,000. We strongly recommend that you purchase the Budget Protection Plan at an additional daily payment of $25.00 + GST per day, which reduces your insurance excess from $2500.00 + GST to $250.00 + GST Personal accident insurance, personal effects cover, loss of keys, replacement cover and a guaranteed replacement vehicle in the event of an accident are also included in this package. This will be arranged and paid for locally.

* Costs shown are for standard car groups. Groups P, W, V & I pay $28 + GST per day to reduce the excess to $250 + GST. Full terms and conditions of all insurance coverage will be provided at the time of rental. Please ensure you understand the cover provided prior to signing your rental agreement.

DRIVING RESTRICTIONS - Vehicles may be driven in the North & South Island, but must be returned to the same location unless a one way rental has been reserved in advance. Vehicles must only be driven on well maintained roads. Vehicles (including 4 wheel drives) are not permitted on the following roads: Skippers Road (Queenstown), Ninety Mile Beach (Northland), Tasman Valley Road (Mt. Cook), all roads north of Colville (Coromandel Peninsula), and any unformed roads, including beaches.

Car Hire companies will not cover vehicles for any damage sustained whilst driving off-road or on un-paved roads, any vehicle submersion, creek or river crossing, driving through low plain flooded areas or beach driving. Any damage cost incurred whilst travelling on such roads will be the responsibility of the renter. A full list of restrictions will be given to you at the time of signing your rental agreement.

REFUNDS - We regret that we cannot provide any refund for any unused rental days shown on a voucher.

YOUR RENTAL AGREEMENTS- Whilst we will confirm the reservation of your request, you will be required to sign a rental agreement before driving the vehicle in New Zealand. At this point your contract will be between yourself and the car rental company. Important Information Please check all charges listed on your rental agreement prior to authorizing your credit card payment. Any queries should be brought to the attention of the car hire representative before leaving the rental station.

ONE WAY RENTALS - You can collect your car in one city and return it to another, but a one way drop fee may apply on some locations. Budget rental cars cannot be taken across on the Interislander ferry between Wellington and Picton. Passengers will have to leave the vehicle at the Ferry Terminal and collect another vehicle on arrival.

INTER-ISLAND HIRES - In the interest of convenience and economy (it is costly to ferry vehicles across the Cook Strait), Budget vehicles cannot be taken on the inter-island ferry between the North and South Islands. You will be required to drop off the vehicle at the Budget office at the Ferry Terminal either in Picton or in Wellington prior to boarding the ferry, and to pick up a subsequent vehicle from the Budget office upon arrival on the other Island.
Budget offices at the Inter-island Ferry Terminals are staffed to meet the ferry schedules.
Inter Island hires are treated as a continuous hire, providing the second vehicle is collected within 24 hours of returning of the first vehicle. To ensure that the next vehicle is available at the Ferry Terminal we must be advised of the date and time of your ferry crossing when making your car reservation.

A minimum rental of 3 consecutive days is required for all multi-island rentals. Should a rental cross over date bands, the rate for the entire rental is based on the pick up date of the first rental.
