The city centre is an architectural masterpiece with its blocks of ochre buildings, retaining the air of a peaceful and austere provincial town. With a population of nearly 4 million people it is situated on the right bank of the Song Hong or Red River and about 110 kilometres inland from the Gulf of Tonkin.

Bangkok is Thailand's capital city and known to the Thai people as "Krug Thep" (the City of Angels) and is one of the most exciting cities in the world. It holds the essence of the Thai spirit and is very much the "heart" of the country. Although fast-growing with some 10 million inhabitants, it has something to offer for everyone. Its lively collection of markets, shops, restaurants and nightlife venues contrast nicely with the magnificent "wats" (temples), lavish palaces, sprawling parks and most interesting museums.

Yangon (formerly Rangoon) lies in the fertile delta country of southern Myanmar (formerly Burma) right on the wide Yangon River and is 30 kilometres from the sea. Although the population hovers around 4 million, the city is so full of trees and shade that some districts are practically jungle. This gives it a totally different feel from most other Asian cities of its size, yet most would agree that it has to be one of the most charming cities in Asia.

Yangon is home to the historic Shwedagon Pagoda, which towers almost 98 meters above Yangon and never fails to enchant visitors. The shimmering main stupa (tower) soars high above the capital and is visible for miles. One of the wonders of the religious world, the Shwedagon Pagoda is believed to enshrine 8 of Gautama Buddha Era and was built by King Okkalapa on Singottara hill more than 2,500 years ago.
Chauk Htat Gyi Reclining Buddha is a colossal 70 metre long reclining Buddha Statue and is one of the largest images in Myanmar. It is housed in a large metal-roofed shed, only a short distance northeast beyond the Shwedagon Pagoda. Originally built in 1907, but suffered much damage due to the climate over the years, was demolished in 1957 and rebuilt to its current structure in 1966.
Sule Pagoda situated in the centre of Yangon, besides the Mahabandoola Park and independence Monument, is said to be over 2,000 years old and enshrines a hair of Buddha. The golden pagoda stands 46 metres high and is unusual in that its octagonal shape continues right up to the bell and inverted bowl.

Bago, an ancient capital of the Mon Kingdom in the 13th Century is situated only about 80 kilometres from Yangon. And was reputedly founded by two Mon Princes from Thaton in 573 AD. The Htauk Kyant War Memorial Cemetery is located here, where 2,700 stone-graves of Commonwealth and Allied Forces Fallen Soldiers of World War II are honourably kept.
Shwethalyaung Pagoda houses a huge reclining Buddha, reckoned to be one of the largest Reclining Buddha's in the world as well as one of the most life-like. The site measures 55 metres long and 16 metres high.
Bago market is very interesting and just across the river bridge from the Bago Railway Station. Take time to wander around the various market buildings as the market serves as a distribution point for cloth, household items, and many other imports all at good prices.
The highest pagoda in Myanmar as the Shwemawdaw Pagoda at 114 metres high and is said to be over 1,000 years old being built by two merchants. It has been repeatedly damaged and rebuilt in its history due to earthquakes and natural disasters, yet the glittering golden top of the stupa reaches 14 metres higher, than the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon.
Kyaik Pun Pagoda is just outside of Bago on the Yangon road and consists of four 30 metre-high sitting Buddha's placed back- to- back around a huge, square pillar. According to legend, four Mon sisters were connected with the construction of the Buddha's and that if any of them should marry, one of the Buddha's would collapse. One of the four disintegrated in the 1930 earthquake, leaving only a brick outline, although it has since been fully restored.
Thanlyin is 45 minutes by ferry across the Bago River and was an important trading centre under the Portuguese in the 17th century. Places of interest also include the Khauk Pagoda and Yele Pagoda on a small island at Kyauktan, located 12 kilometres south of Thanlyin.

Siem Reap is a charming city, with a river flowing right through the town centre and is home of the most famous temple of Angkor, the Angkor Wat, which was built in the 12th century and today, is one of the greatest religious monuments in the world. Its design replicates the spatial universe in miniature, composed of the Mount Meru, surrounded by the continents and the oceans. The temple hosts 800 metres of extraordinary bas-reliefs, depicting epic events of Khmer history and myths. Suryavarman II dedicated the temple to Vishnu and this explains its unusual orientation to the west.

With a vibrant culture, unique arts and ceremonies, a friendly people and scenic beauty with beautiful beaches, really makes Bali an island almost unreal in today's changing world, and is one of the reasons why it is the most attractive and popular of destinations for visitors to Indonesia. The island is mountainous in the centre with a cluster of volcanoes of which one is the active Mount Agung and considered very sacred. Terraced rice-fields dominate the landscape, with small streams bringing water for irrigation.
The biggest attraction of Bali though, is its unique art
and culture. It almost seems that every person is an artist in some form or another,
whether it be painting, weaving, carving, basketry or even decorations, which
are made and placed at many shrines in public areas, on roads, paddy fields or
in homes. The Balinese are a friendly people and because they are more exposed
to visitors, generally speak more English, than people in other parts of Indonesia,
yet they have managed to preserve their culture despite these overwhelming foreign
influences.

Tanjung Benoa - Further along from Nusa Dua Beach lies the beach area of Tanjung Benoa, which was originally a series of Balinese fishing villages. It is Bali's newest resort area and fast becoming popular as a haven for water sport enthusiast and home to numerous hotels, small shops and restaurants. Whilst not having the manicured landscaped look of nearby Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa exudes a more local Balinese charm.

Kuta Beach Area - This is without doubt the most lively and active location in Bali. In central Kuta and Legian, life is at its busiest with hundreds of shops and market stalls selling anything and everything and a multitude of restaurants right on your doorstep. As you heads north towards Seminyak, you will find a more boutique style of shopping where you can buy beautiful clothes to Balinese furniture. But, it also boasts very trendy restaurants and nightclubs as well.

Sanur Beach Area - With its protected beaches, it is an ideal location for families with young children and people wanting perhaps a slower pace to their holiday, with the accent on relaxation. The resort is set amongst lush tropical gardens, which blend in with the natural beauty of this former fishing village. Whilst shops and street stalls are in abundance, selling everything from casual clothing to arts and crafts, there are many open air restaurants dotting the shady streets, whilst somehow not intruding on the truly Balinese atmosphere and feel of this idyllic resort.
