Heron Island is a true coral cay right on the Great Barrier Reef. Here you can swim straight off the beach to an endless garden of coral where the waters are literally teeming with beautifully coloured fish and marine life. The reef is a unique experience on Heron and exclusively for guests. From November to March each year a special event occurs. A breeding population of turtles come ashore onto Heron Island to nest and lay their eggs at the same spot they were born. With careful guidelines for viewing, you can immerse yourselves in to this event with casual walks around the island's beaches.
Location - Heron Island Resort lies on the Tropic of Capricorn, 72 kilometres off the Queensland coast northeast of the town of Gladstone. Regular flights to Gladstone are available from both Brisbane & Cairns. Once at Gladstone, you have a choice of transfer options to get to Heron Island itself. (see below).
How to Get There
Boat Launch - A courtesy coach will pick you up from Gladstone airport at 10.15am and arrive at the Marina approximately 10 minutes later. The Heron Islander departs Gladstone Marina at 11.00am, and arrives at Heron Island 2 hours later. On your return day, the launch departs at 2.00pm Island time and arrives into Gladstone at approximately 3.45pm (EST). From the Marina, a courtesy coach will pick you up and take you directly to Gladstone Airport.
A small number of Gladstone flights arrive after 10.00am and depart before 5.00pm. If you are booked on one of these, then a Helicopter Service is your best transfer option. Transfer time is 30 minutes. Full details and timings available on request. Luggage restrictions apply (15 kgs per person, 1 soft-sided suitcase per person.
Resort Facilities - You are quite literally surrounded by reef and you can swim right from the beach to an endless garden of coral teeming with marine life. Additional activities include informative guided reef and island walks, guided birdlife walks, stargazing, snorkelling lessons in the swimming pool, tennis & table tennis.
Accommodation - Our prices are based on Turtle or Reef Rooms. Alternate room types & suites are available, details on request.
Turtle Rooms: Located in a garden setting, a short walk away from the beach and close to the central resort facilities. With two ground level rooms per block featuring a deck and outdoor area. Rooms are compact and interiors are bright and fresh.
Reef Rooms: Positioned close to the beach and offer reef and water views through a canopy of beachside trees and shrubs. Reef Room interiors are light and comfortable with a living-area extending outdoors to a balcony or garden.
