Sydney to Melbourne Self Drive - 11 Days

 

 

 

 

 

This leisurely paced tour begins with a 3 night stay in Sydney, giving you ample time to explore this popular city. As you begin your self drive journey southwards, your drive takes you along some of southern Australia’s stunning coastline. Take the time to explore the bays and beaches before arriving in Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city, for a 3 night stay.

Day 1 - Arrive Sydney
On arrival in Sydney a private transfer will take you from the airport to your hotel. After checking in at your hotel the remainder of the day is free for you to explore. Overnight in Sydney at the Grace Hotel.

Day 2 - Sydney
This morning, make your way to Sydney Opera House for a guided tour of one of the most recognisable sights of Sydney. After completing your tour, enjoy some free time until your afternoon City Highlights and Bondi Tour. This tour takes you to the major Sydney highlights before wandering along world famous Bondi Beach. Return to your hotel late this afternoon. Overnight at the Grace Hotel.

Day 3 - Sydney
A day of leisure for you to explore Sydney. Overnight at the Grace Hotel.

Day 4 - Sydney to Huskisson (120 miles)
Collect your car from the Budget Sydney City depot office and begin your drive south on Highway 1 (Princess Highway). Continue on the highway before taking the turnoff to Jervis Bay in time for a late afternoon swim or surf. Jervis Bay, is famed for its white sand, its clear water and its friendly dolphins. In the bay itself, the tranquil water and great beaches are ideal for all the family. The main town on the bay is Huskisson where you stay tonight at the Dolphin Sands B&B.

Day 5 - Huskisson to Tilba Tilba (125 miles)
After breakfast, continue south to arrive at the wonderfully preserved villages of Central Tilba and Tilba Tilba, an area renowned for its clean uncrowded beaches and beautiful forested mountains. Your accommodation (Green Gables) offers the perfect bed and breakfast accommodation getaway to experience all aspects of the area. Overnight at Green Gables.

Day 6 - Tilba Tilba to Gipsy Point (125 miles)
After breakfast, leave Tilba Tilba behind and continue across the border into Victoria to Mallacoota and Gipsy Point. Nestled in the heart of Croajingalong National Park, this amazing getaway is located on the water’s edge of Mallacoota Lakes near to the junction of the beautiful Genoa and Wallagaraugh rivers. Day 7 - Gipsy Point to Metung (140 miles)
Travel south on the Princess Highway towards Lakes Entrance and the stylish village of Metung. Set in the heart of the picturesque village of Metung The Moorings is the only waterfront resort on Australia's largest inland lake system, the Gippsland Lakes. Overnight at the Moorings at Metung.

Day 8 - Metung to Melbourne (195 miles)
Continue along the inland route, the Princes Highway to Melbourne, passing through the country towns of Traralgon, Sale and Moe. Arrive in Melbourne the capital of the state of Victoria and Australia’s second largest city. The magnificently preserved Victorian architecture of Melbourne gives the city a special charm, reminiscent of the great cities of Europe. Your car is not required after today, so on arrival please return your car to the Melbourne city office by 5pm. Overnight at the Vibe Savoy Hotel.

Day 9 - Melbourne
This morning, meet in the hotel lobby to commence a Morning Melbourne City Sights Tour. Discover all the charms of elegant and contemporary Melbourne. Cross the West Gate Bridge for amazing city views and observe the Yarra River's bustling activity. See Queen Victoria Market, Fitzroy Gardens and Albert Park, home to the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. The afternoon and evening are free for you to explore. Overnight at the Vibe Savoy Hotel.

Day 10 - Melbourne
A full day for you to relax or explore. Overnight at the Vibe Savoy Hotel.

Day 11 - Melbourne - End of Tour

Pass the bayside suburb of Geelong and continue on to Torquay where you will join the Great Ocean Road. This magnificent road offers some of the most spectacular coastal views in Australia. Travel past famous Bells Beach and enjoy the scenery as you pass wide beaches, dramatic cliffs and idyllic coves. Overnight at Apollo Bay at Captains at the Bay.

Day 4 - Apollo Bay (Free Day)
The day is free for you to explore Apollo Bay, which is set on the coast with excellent surfing and swimming beaches and the Otway Ranges as a backdrop. Overnight at Apollo Bay at Captains at the Bay.

Day 5 - Apollo Bay to Port Fairy (131 miles)
After crossing the spectacular Otway Ranges, you’ll arrive at Port Campbell National Park, an area of immense beauty. See the power of the ocean at work at the Twelve Apostles, a row of great stone pillars— the most spectacular landmark on the Victorian coastline. See the remains of London Bridge. Travel past Warrnambool, arriving at the historic fishing village of Port Fairy this afternoon. Overnight at the Oscars Waterfront Boutique Hotel.

Day 6 - Port Fairy (Free Day)
The day is free to explore this former whaling port located at the estuary of the Moyne River. Port Fairy is a holiday resort bordered by both river and ocean and is home to a large fishing fleet. Overnight at the Oscars Waterfront Boutique Hotel.

Day 7 - Port Fairy to Naracoorte (161 Miles)
Travel from Port Fairy west today towards the South Australian border and up the Limestone Coast region to the Coonawarra wine district and the town of Naracoorte. Settled in the 1840s, the area is famous for its World Heritage-listed and fossil-filled limestone caves. Overnight at the Dartmoor Homestead.

Day 8 - Naracoorte
A free day to explore Naracoorte and the surrounding area. Overnight at the Dartmoor Homestead.

Day 9 - Naracoorte to Adelaide (219 miles)
Head towards Adelaide today, travelling via Padthaway, Keith, Murrays Bridge enroute to Adelaide and check into your hotel. Return your car to the city office of Budget (before 4.30pm Mon-Fri or to the airport before 10.00pm Sat-Sun). Overnight in Adelaide at the Stamford Plaza Hotel.

Day 10 - Adelaide
A full day tour today will take you to the famous wine growing region of the Barossa Valley. Travel through the historic town of Gawler. Stop at the Whispering Wall to discover how this acoustic phenomenon carries a whispered message one hundred and fifty metres. You will visit three premium wineries and enjoy tastings of award winning wines and a delicious 3-course lunch. A rare guided walk through a vineyard will enhance your knowledge. Day 7 - Coffs Harbour (Free day)
A free day to explore Coffs Harbour, an area of contrasts: beaches, high mountains, dense rainforest and banana plantations. Overnight at the Sebel Aqualuna, Coffs Harbour.

Day 8 - Coffs Harbour to Byron Bay (154 miles)
Depart Coffs Harbour via South Grafton and Maclean. At Maclean, an interesting detour may be taken by joining the coast road to Yamba, a scenic and popular surfing and holiday resort. Leaving Yamba, rejoin the Pacific Highway back at Maclean and travel via the town of Woodburn to Ballina. At Ballina, again leave the Pacific Highway and travel along the coast road through the pretty resort town of Lennox Head, to reach Byron Bay. Overnight at The Byron at Byron Resort & Spa.

Day 9 - Byron Bay (Free day)
A free day to explore Byron Bay, renowned for its balmy climate and excellent surfing beaches. Overnight at The Byron at Byron Resort & Spa.

Day 4 - Fraser Island
A full day tour on a custom-designed, four-wheel-drive coach will introduce you to Fraser Island. This morning collect your rental car and depart Darwin to Jabiru in the World Heritage-listed Kakadu National Park. A free day to explore the Kakadu area. There are many Aboriginal rock art sites, walks to escarpment lookouts, waterfalls and impressive visitor centres. Day 5 - Kakadu to Katherine (190 miles)
Travel 30 kilometres out of Katherine and discover the natural wilderness of Nitmiluk National Park. Check out the diverse range of Aboriginal artwork on offer at one of Katherine's galleries or take a cool dip at Edith Falls, a large pandanus-fringed plunge pool. Overnight at the All Seasons Katherine Hotel.

Day 6 - Katherine to Kununurra (319 miles)
Depart Katherine and join the Victoria Highway to Kununurra. On the way perhaps stop at Gregory National Park where the red of the Centre blends gently with the green of the Top End. Cross the Western Australia border to Kununurra, the gateway to the Kimberley's from the East. Overnight at the All Seasons Kununurra.

Day 7 - Kununurra (free day)
