BEDARRA ISLAND - QUEENSLAND

Bedarra Island is a tiny green jewel set in the warm tropical waters off North Queensland and is an oasis of untouched beauty without crowds and noise. There are times when you just don't want to be found, and Bedarra Island is without doubt one of the better corners of the world in which to disappear. The Bedarra Bay Resort offers complete solitude and pampered relaxation, nature walks and stretches of golden beach and is a haven of incredible wonders secluded in the warm waters of Queensland's tropical north.

Bedarra Island is favoured by discerning travellers seeking a very private, high quality escape into an exotic world of pampered luxury. Natural beauty, seclusion, superior service, and with exquisite food and fine wines all included in the price, it is a favourite destination for the fortunate few. The food is simply exquisite, a standard that Bedarra guests demand, with a team of chefs and a new menu every day. The crayfish, mud-crabs and baby barramundi are market selected then flown in, as fresh as if you caught them yourself. If it's not fresh - it's not on the menu.

The accommodation consists of 15 private freestanding luxurious villas in two styles - Double Storey: 9 villas offering a unique design featuring an upstairs lounge, double balconies and lower level bedroom and bathroom. These villas are in a rainforest setting close to the beachfront and the central resort facilities. Split Level:6 villas with bedroom and living areas separated in a casual format, and nestled amongst lush tropical rainforest overlooking the resort and neighbouring islands. The King size bed can be separated to provide a twin configuration if desired. All villas are built to take advantage of the immediate natural landscape, and are separated from each other by natural rainforest to ensure privacy. Each villa is designed to accommodate 1 or 2 people using existing bedding, and the villas are serviced daily.

Although the emphasis is on peace and relaxation on Bedarra Island, however there are a range of activities available on the island including: catamarans, fishing, paddle skis, sailboards, motor dinghies and tennis. Snorkelling and scuba diving trips to the Barrier Reef (via Dunk Island) and private reef fishing and sailing charters are also available for additional charge. Casual resort style clothing is suggested for daytime wear, with smart casual attire appropriate for after dark. A camera, sunscreen, and suitable footwear should be brought for island walks.

You will be greeted with an invitation to treat the island as your own home, to come and go as you please - very much a club atmosphere with unwritten rules of grace and style. Perhaps that's why so many guests from all corners of the world return to Bedarra Island again and again… Bedarra Island is not just a place one visits, it is a very personal pleasure to be savoured.

BRAMPTON ISLAND - QUEENSLAND

Brampton Island is unique with an atmosphere that is not only utterly enjoyable but one that is also totally relaxed. Almost entirely a National Park with nothing but trees and ocean as far as you can see, with seven pure white beaches surrounding the island. Brampton Island is an idyllic resort with special appeal to romantics of all ages from honeymooners to retirees. It offers peace and privacy with a vast range of sports and activities. Brampton Island is largely an escape for adults and does not have a children's club, though it can provide baby sitters.

Located north of the Tropic of Capricorn but south of the Wet Tropics region of Queensland, Brampton Island is 32 kilometres north east of Mackay off Queensland's tropical coast. It is in the Cumberland Group of islands which mark the southern entrance to the Whitsunday Passage, the coastal shipping channel inside the Great Barrier Reef. Brampton Island enjoys an average year-round temperature of 27 degrees Celsius and has less rain and humidity than more northerly resorts.

The resort takes up just a small part of the northern edge of the 7.7 square kilometre Brampton Island, snuggled on a point surrounded by the pristine National Park and disturbed only by several kilometres of walking trails. It is a granite island once connected to the mainland, but unlike many off the tropical Queensland coast, has its own coral reef just off the main beach. The island has seven beautiful sandy beaches, some very private. It is heavily timbered and home to more than 50 species of birds.

Activities available on Brampton Island include tennis, catamaran sailing, sailboarding, beach volleyball, beach cricket, bocce, chip and putt golf, bushwalking, snorkelling, archery, and many more. Most of the sports and leisure activities and entertainment at Brampton Island are included and equipment, except for tennis and golf balls, is provided for your use. The resort has two swimming pools - one saltwater by the beach, one freshwater - and three floodlit tennis courts. Court bookings are necessary.

There are 108 rooms in three styles of accommodation - Ocean View Rooms with beach or ocean views out to the Whitsunday islands, Palm Rooms with tropical garden views, and Carlisle rooms in a garden setting with commanding views of Carlisle Island. As your stay on Brampton Island includes a superb breakfast, lunch and dinner each day, there are two restaurants to choose from, the Bluewater Restaurant, which is the main place to dine and to enjoy the stunning ocean view and the Saltwater Cafe and Bar, for snacks, coffee, delicious pastries, smoothies and fresh juices. The Bluewater Lounge, an ideal place for before and after dinner drinks and is open until late and features entertainment nightly with a zany staff musical revue every Saturday night.

HERON ISLAND

Heron Island is the only international resort on the Great Barrier Reef exclusively devoted to island guests and is ribboned by sugar white sands, crystal clear waters and acres of brilliant coral. Walk straight from the beach to the Reef's edge and the waters are literally teeming with life to explore acres of living coral just minutes from your room. That's what sets Heron Island apart, as you are actually living on the reef.

The Great Barrier Reef consists of a maze of reefs and islands stretching two thousand kilometres along the Queensland coast. It is the largest coral reef system in the world and the richest in biological diversity and in fact, of the 1,500 species of fish to be found on the Reef, 1,200 of them can be found right here off Heron Island. Heron Island is a true nature lover's paradise, it is a Marine National Park and offers some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in Australia. From November to March, turtles lay their eggs on the island and from December onwards the hatchlings emerge and scramble down to the island. From June to October, hump back whales can be sighted offshore and all year round Heron Island is home to thousands of birds.

Heron Island has a total of 117 rooms of different categories, all rooms are serviced daily and to help guests leave the outside world behind, there are no televisions or telephones in any guest rooms on the island. Reef Suites are 38 mid-range rooms are ensuite with 1 queen-sized bed and 1 single bed and can accommodate up to 3 people. The Heron Suites are 44 deluxe beach and side two room ensuite units also with 1 queen-sized bed and 1 single bed plus balcony and also accommodate up to 3 people. There are 4 premium extra large Point Suires in a one room configuration, with balcony in a prime view location, each ensuite with a king-sized bed. Finally the Beach House is a premium beach frontage accommodation with a bedroom and sitting room, balcony, queen-sized bed, and ensuite with bath and toilet and accommodates two adults only.

All meals are included in the price, breakfast and lunch are lavish buffets while dinner is a four course menu service. The Maitre D' allocates guests' tables for the duration of their stay at the first meal and special diets and picnic hamper service is available by advance arrangement. The Pandanus Lounge and Bar opens onto reef side terrace and features panoramic reef views, cocktail bar, entertainment lounge, dance floor and upstairs games area. A coffee shop is located within the Pandanus Lounge serving cappuccinos, cakes and snack foods.

Interpretative reef walks operate daily, subject to tides, birdlife walks, reef snorkelling, turtle nesting tours, coral viewing cruises and humpback whale spotting are just some of the many activities that are available on Heron Island. There are swimming pools, tennis courts and table tennis tables also available. But the biggest attraction for many is the scuba diving as Heron Island has one of the best diving locations in Australia, as, for a start, there is no need for daytrips out to the reef, because you're already there and can easily enjoy two full dives a day.

As Heron Island is part of a double reef system, there are over twenty different dive sites, more than half of which are just fifteen minutes from the beach and with so many acres of living coral literally teeming with fish, it is easy to see why keen divers love it. All this, is why people come from all over the world to this beautiful coral cay and once they are here, it's the casual island life that brings them back. There are no marble fountains or bronze statues, no lifts to catch or keys to lose on Heron Island.

Unlike most, Lizard Island is close to the inner and outer Barrier Reef and in additional to the two main and most famous activities of Scuba Diving and Fishing, the other activities available on the island include tennis, windsurfing, water-skiing, catamaran sailing, glass bottom boat trips, paddle skis, outboard dinghies, basic fishing gear, snorkelling gear, bushwalking, hiking and picnics. Lizard Island offers full Scuba Diving facilities including equipment and courses. The nearby "Cod Hole" is a mecca for divers with its amazing Moray Eels and massive Potato Cod that swim right up to you with curiosity and fascination, and, this is just one of the many unforgettable dive sites that are all close by.

Lizard Island is every fisherman's dream, where the fishing remains fast and furious all year round. Barracuda, Spangled Emperor, Yellowfin, Dogtooth Tuna, Sailfish, Spanish Mackerel and Giant Trevally, these are just some of the excellent sports fishing to be had when you fish the rich tropical waters off Lizard Island. For the serious fisherman, Lizard Island offers the thrill of Big Game fishing between September and November, with the world famous annual Black Marlin Classic staged in October every year, resulting in the Lizard Island Game Fishing Club becoming home to a remarkable seven World and two Australian records.

Could it be the tantalizing array of island activities, or the comfort and appointments of the island's accommodations? Perhaps... but almost certainly, the fine food and excellent hospitality play a major role in the overwhelming contentment their guests enjoy. Choose the outdoor ambience of dining on the beach with the soft light of the moon, augmented by the delicate flicker of flares in harmony with the sound of the gently lapping waters. As for the tempting menu, the Lodge is rightly renowned for its superb food, fully included in the price, which graces the tables at every meal. So, relax and be pampered on this magnificent island.

ORPHEUS ISLAND - QUEENSLAND

Orpheus was the legendary poet and musician whose enchanting lyre playing had the vitality to charm gods, mortals and animals, and to move rivers, earth and trees in Greek mythology. In reality, Orpheus Island is indeed an enchanted island, afloat on the living kaleidoscope of the Great Barrier Reef, and evidence of the magical works of the legendary lyre player abound on this enchanted rain forest island located right on Australia's world famous Great Barrier Reef.

Fringed by sandy beaches, wreathed in spectacular coral gardens, invigorated with native flora and fauna, the serene Orpheus Island has quietly lured those seeking sanctuary from the rest of the world. 100 species of fish and 340 of the 350 known species of Reef coral can be found in the underwater gardens of the Island's several sheltered bays, with the channel at the southern point of Orpheus believed to host the Reef's largest range of soft corals. This enchanted isle stretches for 11 kilometres through the warm, clear waters of the Coral Sea, off the Queensland coast between Townsville and Cairns.

The Resort is nestled in a sheltered bay on the western (mainland) side of the island, catering for only a maximum of 74 guests in 31 private rooms of which 25 are beachfront rooms. There are 8 Beachfront Terraces, each with a terraced patio area with ensuite bathroom with shower. The 15 Beachfront Sudios are slightly larger, with a personal patio and ensuite bathrooms with spa baths. The larger, 2 Beachfront Bungalows are individual rooms also with spa bath, having a private enclosed garden and personal patio. In addition to the Beachfront Rooms there are also 6 Hillside Villas situated on the hillside behind the resort, 3 minutes walk from the beach with views of the sea or gardens. Each Villa features a king size bedroom with spa bath, and a queen size bedroom with ensuite, a spacious lounge area and a broad open private patio.

More than any attraction or entertainment, food, great food, sustains the perfect holiday and all meals are included. Orpheus Island's much celebrated and ever changing menu features the freshest fruits of land and sea, and some of the finest cuisine you will find on the Great Barrier Reef. The Dining Room, Cocktail Bar and 'Quiet Lounge' are all open air and situated along the beachfront, with only the bougainvillea and palm trees to separate you from the sea.

Due to the size and elevation of the Palm Island group of which Orpheus Island is part of, the entire area is a haven for divers. The average visibility around the islands is 9-12 metres and the bays and lagoons are abundant with coral gardens and bombies reaching from the depths to the surface. A vast variety of hard and soft coral in the area provides homes for all types of marine life and is an underwater photographer's dream. In fact Orpheus is home to 340 of the 350 species of coral found on the Great Barrier Reef. The Outer Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest and most diverse underwater playground and is one of the most sought after diving destinations in the world and situated just 50 minutes by boat from Orpheus Island.

The style is distinctly Mediterranean, and the environment is distinctly tropical Queensland, offering the ultimate in tranquility, seclusion and privacy. With its international standards and intimate nature, the resort has been honored with numerous tourism and hospitality awards over the years. Tranquility is absolute with no telephone in televisions in the rooms and mobile phones are best left at home, as they won't work in this enchanted setting anyway! Orpheus Island Resort is one of the few remaining privately owned Australian island resorts, and is the longest established resort on the Great Barrier Reef.
