San Antonio was founded in 1718 and is one of the oldest cities in Texas. Situated at the southern edge of the picturesque sheep and cattle raising Central Texas Hill Country, San Antonio's considerable charm resides in its unique blending of Spanish, American and German cultures.
Without question, the one spot most closely associated with the city of San Antonio is Texas's most beloved shrine - the Alamo. The noble structure was founded in 1718 as the 'Mission San Antonio de Velero'. From the very beginning, it was called "the Alamo", a Spanish world for the cottonwood trees which grew abundantly nearby. In 1826 the town earned permanent status as the symbolic heart of Texas with the infamous Battle of the Alamo.
