Ferries usually provide a year round passenger, vehicle and in some case freight and mail service between various points on both seaboards of the United States. The ferry systems can be an essential part of the "highway" network, providing critical links between urban areas and rural district and communities. In certain circumstance the ferries provide for some places the only link for automobile travel with the mainland.

Dependent on the length of the journey the fare can include your choice of on board accommodation with or without private facilities, a large selection of meals and snacks, plus entertainment in some cases. On certain ferries it is also possible to take a car, making certain route quite a lot shorter than driving, as well as giving the driver a chance to "see what there is to see" for a change, along the way too!
